The Music In March 2005, the American trumpet player Gary Barone reunited with his former Portland Oregon playing mates, bassist David Friesen and drummer Alan Jones and recorded for two days at the Oasis recording studio in Schallstadt, Germany. He had recorded four previous CDs for David – three with Alan, and wanted to do a group project with these world-class musicians that would feature interactive improvisation within song-form structures. The resulting CD, triune, was released in March, 2006. The CD theme is freedom and unity – the three-bird logo represents "flying high in formation, but loose." – The music of the trio is jazz – a blending of mainstream and neo-bop, influenced by blues and Latin American rhythms. – The instrumentation is a bit unusual - trumpet, hemage bass (a special instrument built for David) and drum set. The lack of a traditional jazz chordal instrument allows for more freedom in group interaction – the interplay of horn and bass taking on a chordal function results in unique shadings of tone colors. – The atmospheric spectrum is wide, and stretches from "cooking" bebop and Latin-jazz to expressive romantic ballads. The players exhibit group and individual creative expression, and invite the listener to take part in this joyous music.
