The
Music
The American trumpeter and the Dutch percussionist
Ro Kuijpers formed a duo, with which they could express their musical ideas and
personalities.
Stylistically, the music is based on a mixture of
Jazz, Funk, Blues, Latin and African rhythms.
The sound is sometimes “traditional,”
contrasting the warmth of the flügelhorn with the driving strength of the conga
drums. At other times, the sound is “exotic,” with Gary’s flute or voice
and Ro’s diverse percussion instruments, such as bells, tabla, bottles, pipes
and other “found objects.”
The band has an extensive repertoire composed and
arranged by Gary and Ro, who also use the color of their voices to give the
music more expressive power.
The atmosphere of each piece varies, with the
emphasis being on constant, rhythmic accompaniment. Gary and Ro accentuate
melody and improvisation by using various tone colors and rhythmic structure.
